Validation

Remarks

Users

  • To access the software below and to ask for a license, you need to be registered as an authorized PVSS (WinCC OA) user.
If you are not registered yet, please follow the Registration Procedure.
You will be prompted for username and password when you click on any software download link. Please use your NICE username and password (if you are a CERN user) or your CERN lightweight account credentials.

License

  • WinCC OA 3.11SP1 uses the same licenses as PVSS 3.8 and 3.6. If you already have a valid license, you may use it with your new WinCC OA 3.11 installation. If you issue a request for the 3.11 license, while you have a valid PVSS 3.8 or 3.6 license, we will likely resend the PVSS 3.6 license to you, rather than generate a new 3.11 license.
  • If you do not have any valid PVSS license, you may need to request a WinCC OA 3.11 license using the license request panel available from the main "WinCC OA Project Administrator" window.
  • The WinCC OA distribution packages (RPMs) on Linux are signed using a GPG key. This allows for verification of package integrity and authenticity. The key needs to be installed once in the machine, and remains valid for all the upgrades. Look at the description in the "Installation and patching" section below for more details.

Version numbers

  • The distribution of the updates (patches) has unique version numbers. Each version number has a form of a 8-digit number, which signifies the date at which the version was prepared (e.g. 20130501).
To ensure that your WinCC OA installation is patched to an identical level as another system, you can apply the cumulative patch (or upgrade your system using the RPM package) with the same date on both systems. Alternatively, if you want all the latest patches, you should download the cumulative patch (or RPM package) with the most recent date.
  • Individual patches for Windows and Linux are provided at the bottom of the page, in MSP and ZIP formats for your convenience. However, we strongly discourage applying the individual ZIP patches. Instead, the cumulative patch in form of EXE file on Windows, and RPM file on Linux with appropriate date should be used to bring your system up to date.
  • If you have any problems with the patches, please report it to our help line.

Installation and patching instructions

The distribution of WinCC OA 3.11SP1 installation and patches for Windows and for Linux differ. Please refer to one of the sections below.

Windows

  • To install WinCC OA 3.11SP1 at CERN, you should use CMF.
  • To install WinCC OA outside of CERN, download the EXE installation from the "WinCC OA 3.11 SP1 Installation" section below, and run it. This exe file is a Self-Extracting archive that contains the WinCC-OA installation and the cumulative patch.
  • To update (patch) your existing WinCC OA installation, you should install the Cumulative Patch.
    • For patching at CERN, the Cumulative Patches are available through CMF.
    • For patching outside CERN, download one of the cumulative patches below (in form of an EXE file) and execute it as administrator (right-click, and choose Run As Administrator in the menu)

Linux

  • WinCC OA installation and patching should only be performed using the CERN-provided RPM packages. The same RPM packages may be used for both: new installation and upgrades of existing ones.
  • Linux distribution is split into three packages: the main one, the "devel" and the "extras". The main package contains all the elements that are usable for typical CERN installation (be it production system or development).
The "devel"subpackage contains the files necessary for C++ development (the "API")
The "extras" subpackage contains the remaining parts, such as german help files, demo applications, and legacy support for old versions of WinCC OA. Typically, only the main package needs to be installed.
  • To install WinCC OA, download the RPM package(s) with the desired version (date), and install them using the rpm -i WinCC_OA_3.11-XXXXX.rpm command (XXXX stands for the version number). You do not need to apply any patches to your installation. The latest RPM package always contain the most up-to-date patches available at the date of their preparation (indicated by the version number)
  • Note that you could use the yum command instead of rpm to perform the installation. This allows for automated installation of all required packages. Again, you should download the appropriate RPM installation file(s), save them into the disk, then use a command such as

Using yum instead of rpm for installation has the advantage of being able to install automatically the packages that are required.

  • Please note that if you are upgrading your system and you had installed the "devel" package before, then you need to upgrade both the main and the "devel" package at the same time (similarly, if you installed the "extras"). You would need to download both of them and use a command such as

  • The RPM installation should not be "patched" using any ZIP files. To upgrade your PVSS installation, you need to use the RPM package with the newer version (date) than the one you have installed in your system, and use the "upgrade" option of RPM (namely, the rpm -U command) or YUM (yum upgrade command). Note that your "patching" installation using ZIP files may damage the integrity of your system.
  • The RPM packages for WinCC OA 3.11SP1 are signed with a PGP key for enhanced security. Before installing the packages you should import the public GPG key (EN-ICE-SCD-GPG-KEY) by executing the following two lines (the first will download the signing key into a local file, the other will install it in your system.

Post-installation steps, project upgrades

  • WinCC-OA 3.11 supports UTF-8 as the default character encoding, as opposed to previously used iso8859-1 encoding. This encoding is proposed when creating new projects. However, the projects that were created with previous versions of PVSS will keep the iso88591 encoding, even after being upgraded to WinCC-OA 3.11. For that reason,  inter-project file exchange might lead to compatibility issues. We recommend to create new projects with ISO encoding (option available during project creation, in the language selection panel).
  • For details on how to upgrade existing projects from PVSS 3.8 SP2, see our FAQ section.
  • There are special steps required to set up Oracle client in a way compatible with WinCC-OA 3.11SP1. These steps are documented in  this dedicated page
  • Oracle RDB Archiver in WinCC OA 3.11SP1 comes with the new database schema version  8.6, which enables new functionality (e.g. "compressions" calculated on the database side). However, existing RDB schemas of version 8.1 (i.e. those used with 3.8SP2) can be used without the need for schema upgrade. The central WinCC OA service recommends to perform the upgrade anyway (following the recommendation of the Release Notes of WinCC OA). For more details contact your central coordination team.
